Jana Byron: A Trailblazer and Advocate for Women in Marine Insurance

Jana Byron was a trailblazing leader in the male-dominated marine and energy insurance sector and a passionate advocate for women. As one of LEMI’s founders, she helped build a community that empowers, mentors, and connects women across the industry – a legacy that continues to inspire.

Marine insurance wasn’t a career Jana initially planned, but it was a natural fit. “I got involved in insurance somewhat by accident, but marine is in my DNA,” she explained, tracing her roots to a family steeped in shipping. Beginning her career as a maritime lawyer, she quickly discovered that her calling lay in P&I claims and insurance. From leading the Houston office of The American Club to senior roles at Thomas Miller/UK P&I Club, and ultimately as Senior Vice President and Practice Leader – Marine at Lockton Companies, Jana brought intelligence, integrity, and vision to every role. She guided teams and clients with expertise, care, and unwavering dedication.

No two days looked the same in her work. As she described it: “One moment, I’m focused on our long-term vision, and the next, I’m diving into a pressing client challenge. The variety is what keeps it exciting.” Beyond the technical side, her leadership extended to mentoring teams, shaping industry conversations, and building lasting relationships – often behind the scenes, yet with profound impact.

Support and mentorship were central to Jana’s career philosophy. She credited her own growth to incredible mentors who guided her and encouraged her to take on challenges even when she doubted herself. This understanding became a cornerstone of her work at LEMI, where she championed mentorship, created opportunities for growth, and inspired colleagues to lead with confidence and purpose.

Jana believed that representation at senior levels was key to changing the industry. “When women see others like them thriving in leadership roles, it helps break down barriers that might otherwise discourage them,” she said. Her advocacy for visibility, sponsorship, and creating leadership opportunities has left an indelible mark on the marine and energy insurance community.

Her warmth, humour, and generosity made a lasting impression on all who worked with her. LEMI continues her legacy by fostering the same supportive, empowering environment she helped create, ensuring that the next generation of women in marine insurance has role models to guide them, just as she did.

Jana Byron’s leadership, vision, and spirit will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her.
